A Fun, Moderate Hike in Logan, UT, USA

A view of the Mouth of the Wind Cave

So Close, Yet So Far

Logan is a terrific city about an hour and a half North of Salt Lake City. It is the home of the Utah State Aggies, Cache Valley Creamery, and incredible outdoor adventure. So, one Friday night, we booked a trip to Guinavah Campground up Logan canyon and decided we’d steal some adventure by hiking the Wind Cave Trail. We arrived at camp at 3:00 PM, and thought, this will give us plenty of time to get up the trail and back…However, little did we know…

We set up camp and found the Camp Host and asked him where the trailhead to the Wind Caves was. He sent us up the canyon and down the canyon. We drove for two hours up and down the canyon. Cell reception (T-Mobile) was poor, and we had no choice but ask people. Finally, as we drove back to camp, my daughter says, that sign says “Wind Cave Trail.” We pulled in and sure enough, that was it. The sad part of this 2 hour detour is, look at the map. We could have walked to the trailhead from our campsite. Note to self, download offline maps before you get to your destination.

But, the weather was good, the kiddos were in great spirits, and we decided to hit the trail. There was a well defined and well maintained trail that led through the majority of the hike. The hike was beautiful!!! Pretty trees and gorgeous views! Towards the top of the trail, there are some switchbacks which lead you to the fake wind caves. Then, we hiked west maybe a quarter-mile and came to the real wind caves.

The wind caves didn’t disappoint! My kids loved scrambling on the rocks and we enjoyed some pictures in the caves. The views of the canyon are splendid and took some time to have some water and snacks. However, because of our late start, it started to get dark and we thought, we gotta go!

We moved pretty fast down the mountain. It is tempting to cut the switchbacks out, but don’t do it – you’re liable to get lost and / or hurt!

We had to use the light of our cell phones for the final half mile of the trail (no moon), but that just added to the fun of the adventure. It’s a great hike, and my kiddos (ages 8 to 18) loved it. Next time you’re in Logan Canyon, put that on your list!
