A Moderate Hike through Red Sand to a Beautiful Waterfall

In August, of a drought year, there was a still a steady stream of water at Calf Creek Falls

The Trailhead

Growing up in Utah, I always heard, “You have to do Lower Calf Creek Falls…It’s worth it!” Yet, until recently, I’ve never made the trip – But, it was on the hike bucket list and we were in Escalante, so we decided to make a quick trip to Boulder! The drive Northeast from Escalante to Boulder was gorgeous! We pulled into the self serve parking lot and talked to the host, who was so fun, paid our fee in the self-serve envelope, threw our Bandit Bags on our backs,  and started the six mile trek to Lower Calf Creek Falls.

So, we hiked in August…in the desert…and guess what, it was hot! We each packed 80 oz of water, and I probably could have taken more. There are some areas of the hike where it is fairly exposed, and I was glad I had my full brimmed hat! That being said, the hike is fantastic. There isn’t a huge elevation gain – pretty flat, but moderate due to the heat and hiking through sand. My 18 year-old daughter and I were able to handle the hike without issue.

The hike is three miles in and three miles back, but I implore you to take time to enjoy the hike! If you’re like me, you focus on the end of the hike and not the journey, but this hike spoke to me to enjoy the journey – a great metaphor for life I suppose.

The hike itself varies between exposed sand to sheltered mud paths with one or two river (let’s say stream) crossings (very low in August). As you begin the final entry to the falls, there are large shade trees welcoming you to the pool and the falls.

The falls were busy, but not uncomforatable. There is a pool at the bottom of the falls and people enjoyed a quick swim to cool down after a sweaty hike. We were impressed that there was a decent flow of water at the end of August, and were able to take some time sitting the shade and enjoying the view. I wish I would have brought a proper picnic – it truly is a magical spot!

After an hour or so, we retraced our path down the out-and-back trail and headed out of the canyon and back towards the car. I was glad to have AC in the adventure vehicle and enjoyed cool drive on the way back to Escalante.
